Crater Lake, OR

Crater Lake is located in southern Oregon and was formed when a 12,000 foot volcano collapsed following an eruption. Later eruptions formed Wizard Island near the southwest shore. The lake is approximately 4.5 miles by 6 miles and is 1,943 feet deep. It has no inlet or outlet for water, but depends on rainfall and evaporation. It is the bluest water we have ever seen. Annual snowfall is 44 feet and the last time the lake froze over was in 1949.

This is a view of the valley from the rim of the crater. The light colored areas are sand. The area around the lake is desert like.

A view of Wizard Island, a volcano within the volcano.

You can see the crator of Wizzard Island on the top.

A view of the lake from one of the many viewpoints.

Another view of the lake.

This is another small island called Phantom Ship, because it resembles an abandoned ship.
This will be the last blog for the next week. We will be on a houseboat and will not have internet service or cell phone from Sept. 13 through Sept. 19. Will resume the blog then.
